How to Prevent Cycling Injuries

Perhaps you are planning to start biking as a means of exercise, but you realistically know that you  will be pushing the limits on your bike to see how fast it can go. While this can be a nice way to spice up your exercise routine, it can also lead to injury.

Unfortunately, when most people think about biking, they do not realize the potential for injury especially when you are talking about pushing the speed barriers. Before hopping on your bike to go for the ride of your life, you should keep the following five tips to prevent cycling injuries in mind.

Proper Bike Setup

When most people think about bike safety, they do not consider investigating the various components of the bike itself. The first thing you need to look out for is over or under-inflated tires. These can cause the bike to get out of control when it would otherwise stay on a straight path. You should also ensure that your legs are the proper distance from the pedals. Ideally, you should have a very slight bend in both knees when they are fully extended to the pedals. Finally, you should ensure that, when in a standing position, that you have approximately a one or two inch clearance between the cross frame and your inseam.

Safety Equipment

While it may seem like an unnecessary expense, you will also want to invest in the proper safety equipment. You should always wear a helmet while on a bike, and a bike store should be able to assist you with the purchase of a proper-fitting helmet. You may also want to consider the purchase of a biking suit and gloves, which will provide a little additional protection for your skin if you should crash.

Good Posture

Another key factor to keep in mind is your riding posture. Since you do not have a backrest on your bike as you would in a car, it is tempting to slouch a little, which can cause a lot of stress on your back. You should try to keep a flat back, and it should be between 45 and 60 degrees.

Stretching

It is also important for you to stretch out before hopping on your bike. You should ensure that your back, calves and hamstrings are nice and loose as these muscles will withstand the greatest amount of stress while riding.

Warm-up

Once you are nice and loose, you should perform one of the various warm-up routines. You will want to start out riding fairly slowly until you begin to break a sweat as this will help to loosen up any tightness that was not quite worked out when stretching.
