The obesity rate in the United States has increased drastically since the 1970s. In fact, the United States has the second-highest obesity rate in the world.

Obesity can take a toll on a person’s health, and obese people are at a greater risk for developing diabetes, heart disease and arthritis. Not only does obesity make a person more susceptible to developing a number of health problems, but it’s also taking a toll on the economy.

It is estimated that the United States spent 450 billion dollars in 2011 on obesity-related costs. One hundred and sixty billion dollars were spent on obesity-related health care costs. It is important to note that obese people earn lower wages than people who are normal weight. In 2008, it is estimated that obese people earned $3.41 less per hour than their normal weight peers. Furthermore, obese people are required to pay higher health insurance premiums.
